Human Rights Watch estimates that about 200,000 migrant domestic workers, mainly from Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, the Philippines and Nepal, are employed in Lebanese households alone.

 

Previous media reports and research by rights groups suggest the workers suffer from regular abuse, and in consequence very high death rates.

This novel describes the life, suffering, and final rescue of a young Ethiopian woman that came to Beirut to earn some money for her family back in Addis Ababa and barely survived. A story that was inspired by the many reports of mistreated and abused migrant workers out there.
